Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often.
Family Care Program
Do you provide child care?
We provide child care during group and individual counseling. Mothers are responsible for arranging child care for workdays or while in school. This encourages a mother in her future independence.
Is this an emergency shelter?
Family Care is not an emergency shelter. It is not designed to provide short-term, temporary relief from bad situations. It is focused on the long-term emotional, physical, and financial health of the mothers and children in care. The average length of stay is about 18 months, although some mothers stay longer.
Can you help me if I am not a Family Care resident?
Family Care offers referral information to community resources that can help with current family concerns. Family Care staff will also pray with you about your current concerns.
What transportation help do you offer?
Family Care staff provide weekday transportation within the Round Rock area for work and health-related activities. Occasionally, cars are donated for Family Care clients, who may have an opportunity to purchase the vehicles at very favorable terms.
Do you take pregnant women?
Family Care is not a maternity program. If you are expecting another child, have your present children in your legal custody, and can manage basic household needs and child care during and after delivery, we can work with you.
Why does a mother need to work or go to school?
The purpose of Family Care is to make long-term changes for the good of the family. All mothers in residence are required to be working, attending school, or both.
What does the program cost?
Family Care mothers pay a small monthly fee, although no one is turned away because they cannot pay. Mothers are required to save a large percentage of their income to build financial stability and good money management.
What services do you provide after I leave the program?
The Aftercare Program keeps a continuing relationship with moms and children who have completed the Family Care Program. Services may include access to the commissary, visits to the Boutique, individual counseling, budgeting help, case management, and limited financial assistance. In effect, the Family Care Program becomes extended family and a place to turn during times of need.

Volunteering
Can I volunteer to fulfill court-ordered community service hours?
Under our policy, we do not provide court-ordered community service hours.
Can I bring my children when I volunteer?
Some volunteer activities are marked “family friendly,” and children are welcome. Other activities may not be appropriate for children under 16. When in doubt, check with us. We do not provide child care for volunteers.
Why can’t I work directly with the children in care?
Opportunities to interact with children are very limited, for several reasons. Under state law, a full background check is required before a volunteer can have contact with children. Even then, we place the interests of each child above all else, and there are often privacy and confidentiality concerns.
How old do I need to be to volunteer?
There is no age limit, although teenagers must be with an adult at all times. Opportunities for children 12 and under are limited to “family friendly” activities.
Do I have to come to your campus to volunteer?
No. You can organize a drive for items on our needs list anywhere, at any time, as an individual, church, business, or group. Just keep our volunteer coordinator aware of your plans.
Privacy
Can you share information about current or former residents?
To protect the privacy of families, Texas Baptist Children’s Home does not confirm whether someone currently or previously took part in our residential programs, and we do not share information about individuals.
