Kearra and her sons

When Kearra came to Texas Baptist Children’s Home with her sons, Kylin and Kamren, she was emotionally exhausted and unsure where to turn. Arguments and unhealthy behavior had left their home unsettled. As a stay-at-home mother without financial resources of her own, she needed a safe place for her family and support to begin rebuilding.

At TBCH, Kearra found a community that surrounded her with love and encouraged her to care for her mental, emotional, and physical health. Through counseling, she began working through grief, guilt, and hurt. Staff helped her set achievable goals and celebrated each accomplishment. As she learned to invest in herself, she also began attending church and growing in her faith.

Her journey included setbacks. Hoping to restore her family, Kearra left the program to reconcile with her children’s father. When the relationship ended, she again struggled to support herself and her sons. She worked to regain stability, accepting a position as an overnight auditor at an Austin resort.

A conversation with TBCH’s Aftercare team opened the door for her to return. For Kearra, that invitation was an expression of grace and another opportunity to move forward.

With renewed support, Kearra began building financial independence. She moved into an administrative assistant role at the resort, earning an increase in pay that helped her purchase a vehicle. With TBCH’s guidance, she developed a budget and followed it, paying down credit card debt, obtaining health insurance, addressing overdue dental needs, and saving consistently. A promotion to guest services manager helped her pay off her car and build nearly $30,000 in savings.

As her confidence grew, so did her faith. Through church, small groups, and prayer, Kearra introduced her sons to the faith that had become central to her healing. Seeing their curiosity about God and their interest in reading the Bible became a source of joy.

The relationships she formed with other mothers and TBCH staff also helped her recognize that she did not have to face challenges alone. She found people who understood her struggles, prayed alongside her, and encouraged her hopes for the future.

With homeownership as her goal, Kearra began searching for a house. Yet even as that dream came within reach, she felt a growing desire to work in ministry. Stress at the resort was affecting her well-being, and she turned to prayer and her TBCH support team as she considered her next steps.

Kearra ultimately chose to step away from the higher-paying position and pursue ministry. An opportunity opened for her to work at TBCH alongside people who had supported her through some of her most difficult moments, giving her a meaningful way to serve within a community she cherishes.

Kearra describes her experience at TBCH as both life-changing and lifesaving. She remains deeply grateful to Children At Heart Ministries and to the staff, donors, and volunteers whose care helped her family find stability and hope.

TBCH provided more than a home. It gave Kearra room to heal, the tools to build independence, and encouragement to pursue a life rooted in faith and purpose.
