The Family Care Program has provided a safe haven for single mothers and their children since 1979. It is a place where mothers and their children can heal from their past and transition into successful, independent futures. Most importantly, the family stays together.

How the program works

The residential program houses up to five families in each cottage, with resident staff supervision and role modeling of everyday living skills. Mothers work toward self-sufficiency in a healthy environment that helps each person and the whole family grow.

How to apply

All clients accepted into the Family Care Program complete an admission application and several steps of assessment. The first step is the application. Qualified applicants then have an intake interview, and staff prepare a written assessment of the family’s physical, educational, financial, medical, spiritual, and emotional needs. The level of motivation on the part of the mother is an important factor.

  • Applicant must be 18 years or older
  • Children must be under the age of 18
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
  • Able to work or go to school full-time
  • Clean criminal background record

Documents we will ask for

  • Birth certificate for each family member
  • Social security card for each family member
  • Immunization record for each child
  • Negative TB test results for the mother
  • Automobile insurance and registration
  • Child custody documents
  • Restraining order, if applicable
  • Criminal background check

You can apply online, or visit our lobby at 1101 N Mays St., Round Rock, Monday through Thursday from 8am to 5pm and Friday from 8am to 12pm to complete a paper application. Our intake coordinator will reach out about next steps. If Family Care is not the right fit, we can refer you to other help.

Inside a cottage

Each cottage in the Family Care Program is designed to feel like home.

Support after families move on

The Aftercare Program keeps a continuing relationship with moms and children who have completed the Family Care Program. Services may include access to the commissary, visits to the Boutique, individual counseling, case management, budgeting help, and limited financial assistance. In effect, the Family Care Program becomes extended family and a place to turn during times of need.

Aftercare clients can email aftercare@tbch.org or call 512-246-4248.

Questions and answers

Do you provide child care?

We provide child care during group and individual counseling. Mothers are responsible for arranging child care for workdays or while in school. This encourages a mother in her future independence.

Is this an emergency shelter?

Family Care is not an emergency shelter. It is not designed to provide short-term, temporary relief from bad situations. It is focused on the long-term emotional, physical, and financial health of the mothers and children in care. The average length of stay is about 18 months, although some mothers stay longer.

Can you help me if I am not a Family Care resident?

Family Care offers referral information to community resources that can help with current family concerns. Family Care staff will also pray with you about your current concerns.

What transportation help do you offer?

Family Care staff provide weekday transportation within the Round Rock area for work and health-related activities. Occasionally, cars are donated for Family Care clients, who may have an opportunity to purchase the vehicles at very favorable terms.

Do you take pregnant women?

Family Care is not a maternity program. If you are expecting another child, have your present children in your legal custody, and can manage basic household needs and child care during and after delivery, we can work with you.

Why does a mother need to work or go to school?

The purpose of Family Care is to make long-term changes for the good of the family. All mothers in residence are required to be working, attending school, or both.

What does the program cost?

Family Care mothers pay a small monthly fee, although no one is turned away because they cannot pay. Mothers are required to save a large percentage of their income to build financial stability and good money management.
